With a mechanical hoeing machine you control weeds without chemicals, both in the row and between the rows. You configure the machine for your crop and soil type, and extend it later with new hoes, weeders or a mower.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to control weeds effectively. Chemical control is falling out of favour: the number of approved herbicides is falling and the rules for using them are getting stricter. Buyers also increasingly ask for crops grown with as few chemicals as possible. Nurseries are therefore actively looking for alternatives, and mechanical weed control is a logical step. You remove weeds with steel instead of chemicals, and you no longer depend on spraying windows or the weather.
With mechanical hoeing, a machine cuts, pulls or loosens weeds from the top layer of the soil. The weeds then dry out on the surface. A hoeing machine is mounted behind or in front of a tractor and works the strip between the rows or in the row itself.
Between the rows, weeds are relatively easy to control with hoes, harrows or a mower. The hardest part is the strip in the row, around the trunk or the crop. Swivel hoes and weeders that move around the plant were developed for exactly this. That way you keep the whole strip clean without manual work.
Which technique works best depends on your crop, soil type and weed pressure. A combination is often the most effective.
Hoeing does more than remove weeds. It loosens the top layer, so rainwater drains better and the soil crusts less quickly. More oxygen also reaches the roots. Many growers see healthier growth as a result.
Mechanical hoeing works best on small weeds in dry weather. Young seedlings are easy to pull out and dry out quickly. Growers who hoe early and regularly keep weeds small and need fewer passes than those who wait until the weeds are large.
